Being wheelchair bound does limit ones mobility but with today’s advancement in medical equipment technologies it’s not such a big constraint as it used to be. Some of the tools that makes life easier for the wheelchair bound people are the wheelchair lift, wheelchair ramp and patient lifter ( also known as hoyer lift )
1. Wheelchair Lifts
Stairs have always been a challenge for wheelchair users but using wheelchair lifts it’s no longer a big challenge. Simply push a button and electric wheelchair lifts can move the wheelchair users along with their wheelchair up and down. It is a great tool since the wheelchair user can operate it independently without the need of assistance from a caretaker. Wheelchair lifts can be installed in home and car. Though when installed in vans the lifts can be quite a costly choice compared to ramps.
2. Wheelchair Ramps
Ramps is a more affordable method for wheelchair users to cross thresholds and also to ascend and descend just like a wheelchair lift. However, unlike the lifts wheelchair ramps are much more popular since it’s cheaper and easier to install especially portable ones. Portable wheelchair ramps are commonly used on vehicles such as van. They are lightweight, easy to install, store and they are also durable.
3. Hoyer Lifts
For moving patients from their wheelchair to the bed and vice versa hoyer lifts is a handy tool to use. It makes transferring patients and easy process for both the patients and the caretakers. There are several types of Hoyer lifts. Each is made for a specific case. There are permanent types that are mounted on walls or ceilings. These types are commonly used to transfer patients from one bed to another but since they are fixed they are harder to install. Portable Hoyer patient lifts is preferable for many since they are mobile and can be used for a more varied tasks such as lifting patients from bed to a wheelchair, wheelchair to bathroom and much more.
